Thinking about getting a suppressor (also called a silencer)? You’re not alone—more and more folks are adding them to their setups for hunting, range time, and general shooting. The process is a little different than buying a regular firearm, but don’t worry—we’re here to walk you through it and make it as easy as possible.
First Things First: Yes, They’re Legal
Good news—suppressors are legal to own in many states, including Texas. The catch is that they’re regulated under federal law (the National Firearms Act, or NFA), which means there are a few extra steps to go through before you can take one home.
It might sound complicated, but we handle this process all the time and will guide you every step of the way.
Step 1: Pick the Right Suppressor
The fun part comes first—choosing your suppressor. We’ll help you find the right one based on what you’re shooting and how you plan to use it. Things we’ll go over include:
- What firearm you’re using
- Caliber compatibility
- Size and weight
- Sound reduction performance
If you’re not sure what you need, that’s totally fine. We’ll help you narrow it down so you feel confident in your choice.
Step 2: Knock Out the Paperwork
Once you’ve picked your suppressor, it’s time to take care of the paperwork. Because suppressors are NFA items, there’s a federal application involved. This typically includes:
- Registering for an account with the ATF
- Filling out the required ATF form 4
- Submitting a photo and fingerprints (we collect digital fingerprints and take your picture in-store at no additional charge)
This is where a lot of people get nervous, but don’t be—we’ll walk you through it and make sure everything is filled out correctly so you don’t run into delays.
Step 3: Sit Tight While It’s Processed
After everything is submitted, the ATF reviews your application and runs the necessary checks. During this time:
- Your suppressor stays here with us
- You just wait for approval
We know the wait isn’t the fun part, but we’ll keep you in the loop if anything changes.
Step 4: Come Pick It Up
Once you’re approved, we’ll give you a call. Then you can come back in, fill out a Form 4473 (just as with any regulary firearm), and finally take your suppressor home.
Before you leave, we’re happy to go over setup, care, and any questions you might have so you get the most out of it.
